Knowing Lost Episode 1.11 “I Know Your Face”

Posted: 31st August 2010 by Sam McPherson in Episodes

The wall behind him sparked as the bullet glanced off it, ricocheting across the hallway, where it embedded itself into the wall and smoldered.

Ryan dropped to the ground, his hands shaking. “Don’t shoot!” he screamed. “Damn it, I’m not armed!”

The metal floor under his face was freezing. He was squeezing his eyes shut, unable to look up at the figure, whoever it was. He’d nearly just died, goddamn it, died. He couldn’t think, he could barely breathe, all he knew was that the figure was walking toward him and that ground was cold

“Who are you?” the figure asked, and Ryan’s thoughts all snapped into one place, focusing on the question.

Who am I? Who am I? Who am I who am I who am I?

“Ryan… Page,” he managed to choke out.

The footsteps stopped, and the figure took a deep breath. “Really?” came the voice, that suddenly sounded familiar. It was someone who he’d seen before. A character that hadn’t really stuck in his memory, but was there nonetheless.

“Are you an Other?” he managed to sum up the courage to ask.

There was a biting laugh. “Yeah,” the figure said with a slightly nasal voice. “I’m an Other.”

Not Dogen. Not Lennon. Not Mac from Sunny. He was running through the faces of Others in his head, but none of them fit the voice, despite its familiarity. His heart was beating fast, so damn fast that it was probably bursting out of his chest. He finally opened his eyes and found himself staring at a tennis shoe. The Other had approached even more closely than he had thought.

“What’s your name?” he asked softly, and the figure dropped into a crouch. He was still holding the handgun he’d taken from Claire, though his index finger was nowhere near the trigger. The safety was even on, Ryan noticed.

Ryan slowly lifted himself from the ground, his eyes locked on the gun. Unlike before, the Other didn’t even flinch. He sat calmly as Ryan leaned up against the wall, his chest heaving. Finally, he glanced from the gun to the figures face.

“I know your face,” he said quietly.

“Don’t you?” the Other replied.

He couldn’t have said that Ethan wasn’t thorough, though admitting so made him sick. He stared down at the body, his mouth gone dry. It was the true handiwork of a madman, though he was a talented madman.

They call it hobbling, Annie Wilkes had told Paul Sheldon in Misery. As Locke looked down on the cauterized wound that was on the bottom of Kevin’s ankle, he couldn’t help but feel the same terror he had only imagined Paul Sheldon to be feeling. Ethan had made Kevin a mirror image of himself; while his right foot had been destroyed in the cave, he’d sawn off Kevin’s left foot and presumably cauterized it with a torch.

Locke swore. He rarely did so, but this seemed the appropriate time. Ryan had been right about Ethan being a sick bastard, that was for sure. But this even went beyond Locke’s own expectations.

Kevin was unconscious, probably from the pain, and Locke bent over, hefting Kevin onto his shoulder. He knew the way back, and he needed to get Kevin to Jack before anything happened. Wherever Ethan was — that could wait. Kevin needed help.

Ryan stared at the Other’s face for a minute. “I can’t… I don’t know you,” he said.

“Yes, you do,” the figure replied, the corners of his mouth twitching with a grin. “We’ve met before, face to face.”

Ryan stared at him, frowning. “You look familiar,” he said quietly, “But I don’t know…”

“Have you lost all faith, too?” the Other asked, and Ryan knew. It had been one of the last faces from the real world he’d seen before he woke up on this godforsaken Island, and here it was, once again.

“Jeff Olsen,” he breathed, and the Other grinned.

“Bingo,” he said, standing up. Shakily, Ryan did the same.

“What the hell are you doing here?” he asked after a moment, steadying himself against the wall. He glanced over at Claire in the chair, still unconscious, and hoped Olsen had a damn good reason.

“Looking for you,” he said. “Didn’t expect to find you here, but I was on my way to find you when I stopped by.”

Ryan frowned. “Why were you looking for me?” he asked.

“It’s a long story,” Olsen said. “And I’d prefer not to tell it twice. “Is Kevin around?”

—-

Locke could feel Kevin’s shallow and labored breathing on his shoulder, and he paced his steps along with Kevin’s exhalations. He didn’t know why. He’d long run out of the energy to keep up his jogging pace, and he had slowed to sort of a quick walk. Kevin’s breath was just an easy metronome, he supposed.

Darkness had fallen on the jungle quite suddenly, with hardly a twilight period between the sun overhead and the glimmer of a moon through the trees. That might have had something to do with his perception of time, he guessed. He’d been so focused that time had simply flown by.

Suddenly, his metronome disappeared. For a moment, he was afraid that Kevin had stopped breathing, and he stopped, lowering Kevin onto the ground gently, preparing himself to do CPR if necessary.

It wasn’t. Kevin’s breathing had only changed speeds as he regained consciousness, and he slowly blinked, his eyes fluttering around beneath his half-closed lids. He gasped finally, sucking in a lungful of air. Locke crouched beside him, feeling helpless to do anything but look concerned.

Kevin’s eyes soon gained focus, and he stared at the canopy above him for a moment, blinking. His eyes then snapped down to Locke’s face, and for a moment they widened in shock.

“No,” he managed to gasp out. “No!”

“What?” Locke asked, leaning in. “What did you say?”

“I don’t want to come back!” Kevin yelped, his voice gaining strength. “I was free. I was free!”

    Oh my god!

  2. Baci says:

This was flipping awesome! For one, a new episode two days in a row? Heck yeah! I decided to drop in to see comments on the other, not expect to find a new episode! So kudos to you, Sam! And I’m glad to see Jeff in this because I was starting to forget about him, but had originally expected him to have a bigger part. And an awesome twist at the end with Kevin being “free.” Keep it up bro!

    • Baci says:

Well, not exactly two days in a row technically, but I read the last episode early yesterday, as I’m sure many did.

  3. Veronica says:

    dammit…this is getting good! XD

  4. Dredgon says:

Love the It’s Always Sunny reference, and it seems like Kevin went into the Flashsideways or something to the like!

  5. Victor says:

I should have guessed Olsen, heh heh. Poor Kev, though. Was there a reason (important to the plot) for the amputation? Brutal!

  6. Helen says:

KEVIN’S FOOT WAS SAWED OFF?! I can’t believe the story went there! The horror. No more traipsing around the jungle for him…and what did he mean at the end? Do I smell flash-sideways? Need to get the story from Kevin’s point of view!

And Ryan, oohh boy…as I read, I was shivering with anticipation about who the Other would be, but Jeff from the plane…NEVER saw that coming. I’ve been wondering each episode where he had gone and when he’d show up. I cannot WAIT for the explanation of that shocker.

Fantastic episode, my favourite so far (I am all about the twists). Keep up the great work!

  7. extrAme says:

    i’m so …………….. speechless
Wonder has anyone honestly guessed Olsen~ I doubt the FSW theory, no one other than Des has ever experienced, or even knows anything about FSW in the original timeline. Near death experience can only let FSW be aware of OT, not the other way around.

Can’t wait to see Olsen’s flashback, hoping it will come in one episode.

    • Meghan says:

I don’t think that’s necessarily true. What about “We can go dutch” ?

That doesn’t mean I think he was in the FSW, though. I think when he died (or nearly did) he was making his way back to HIS original timeline – the one where Lost was just a TV show.

      • extrAme says:

Huh, good point, but I think the only reason Juliet said that is she actually Died, if she hadn’t, like Kevin, she will not enter the afterlife, then no FSW whatsoever.

Nonetheless, it might be something like FSW but not an afterlife one~ Hope we’ll get a thorough explanation in the end.

      • dr.finitevus says:

No,no………..because of the things that have changed in the present, the future is changed, thus leading to an entirely different FSW. Since past experiences have changed for Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and so on, the reality of the FSW timeline has been altered.

  8. Becca says:

Wow, this was a good chapter. I liked the introduction of Olsen. Can’t wait to see more. :D

  9. ImSoLost says:

I gotta ask: Who is Jeff Olsen?

  10. TRALALA! says:

ohhhhh. probably the best episode yet. this is really getting good. i’m sooooooooo glad olsen’s back!!!!!!!! totally predicted it.

  11. TRALALA! says:

ps: dont you think you should update the episode section. whats 1.12 called?

  12. Madman815 says:

Whoah . . . I was actually expecting Jeff Olsen to be the MIB for a second there. I bet that Jeff Olsen would be the villian. Afterall, White Tennis Shoes are attached to villianous minds!

  13. Madman815 says:

Oh yeah, please make the episodes longer again! I understand that the hiatus has caused a shortness in episodes, but please try to increase the length! It makes it feel like a proper episode that way.

  14. Tom Jacob says:

I thing Olsed could be Main Characters in Season 2.

  15. Capn Stu Bing says:

Another great episode!! I’m really beginning to love these shorter installments! I feel like it’s much more of a tease when you get to the end. Also loved the Always Sunny reference. Can’t wait for the next one!

  16. Jason says:

Great episode! Also loved the “Sunny” reference. Things are getting very interesting. Hell of a shocking twist with Kevin’s leg getting amputated!

  17. Eric says:

this episode was fantastic!I like getting 2 episodes that are about this length. Wonder whats going to happen next! This definitely puts a different spin on lost! Just curious but will this have 6 seasons like LOST?

  18. Eledhrim says:

I don’t see this reaching anywhere near 6 seasons.
I’m still enjoying it, but there are too many changes too fast. It seems like there’s too much back and forth ‘action’.
What I enjoyed about the early seasons of LOST was the slow and mellow pace. And I really felt that with the episodes before the hiatus. Ryan and Kevin would lounge about on the beach, and I thoroughly enjoyed taking my time to read those lengthy episodes.
This Ethan ordeal could of been over in one, perhaps two episodes.

Forget what I said before. I for one believe you should return to the longer and slower episodes. And the fact they were a week apart was great and gave me something to look forward to. And believe me, I’d feverishly await the next episode all week!
That being said, it’s free. I shouldn’t complain. And I still enjoy it.

Good Luck all the same, brotha’.

  19. Laverne1974 says:

This is just great! Cheers Sam!

  20. MT says:

Who the hell is Jeff Olson?

  21. Christian says:

Oh man it is on faster than Donkey Kong Its goin down like Charlie Brown!!!
Great job Sam cant wait for the next episode

  22. Pogo Ford says:

There’s only Sawyer who could say everything in four words. Son of a… o___o

  23. mhszilansz says:

please, can somebody remind me who this Jeff Olsen is?

  24. Chris says:

Am I the only one who doesn’t know who Olsen is?

  25. Avenue says:

gah! A surprise episode! Good thing I decided to check the site! Wow, Ethan’s a nasty little puppy ain’t he? Loved the episode, loved the twist! Love this series!

  26. JackInRealLife says:

out of this world amazing!! i’m definitely addicted to this KL thing….

  27. Jeremy says:

i gotta admit, i didnt remember who olsen was either, seems alot of other people didnt either. before sam posted what episode to reread to findd out (1st episode) i went back, prepared to reread the whole series to find out. seems like you couldve done a little better job of pinpointing exactly who olsen was, maybe make ryan say somethin like, ‘i remember you from the plane!’ or sumthing like that. but still good plot twist nonetheless! i totally expected christian shepherd to be that ‘other’ when you mentioned the tennis shoes!

    • Sam McPherson says:

I don’t think it’s my fault. Olsen was a central part of episode 1.01 (he even spoke the episode’s title phrase). I have respect for you guys, the readers, and I would be pandering if I made Olsen’s identity any clearer.

      • Jeremy says:

alrite fair enough, maybe some of us readers didn’t pay enough attention at the very beginning, seeing as how alot of people commented and seemed to know exactly who he was. still looking forward to seeing how far you can take this story!

  28. Silk Spectre says:

That picture is… unnerving. Awesome episode. REALLY crazy.

  29. MissSharkington says:

    Woah! Great episode!

  30. Curtis says:

Fantastic, so many great plot developments.

  31. lapidus7 says:

    Dear Sam,

I have created a Knowing Lost Wiki at http://knowinglost.wikia.com/wiki/. I assume that I don’t need you permission but, just let me know if it’s not okay. And, if there’s any way for you to make an anouncement to your fans about it, that would be extremely helpful. (I’m pretty much the only person editing it write now)

    Thanks!
    Lapidus7

  32. Celebok says:

Okay, my theory about Jeff Olsen? It’s actually MIB posing as Jeff! The real Jeff died in the crash. After MIB as smokey scanned Kevin and Ryan, he decided to take Jeff’s form instead of Christian’s, which is why Christian’s body was still in the coffin.
