A rustling of leaves to his left broke his concentration.

He leapt to his feet, his hand flying instinctively to his hip, where his holstered knife itched to be unsheathed and thrown. His hand rested on the hilt, and he waited, watching intently.

Ryan fell from the underbrush onto the beach sand, his face covered in a myriad of scratches and cuts. He sprawled on the beach sand, heaving for breath. He’d been running for a while.

“Ryan,” Locke said calmly, removing his hand from his knife but looking into the jungle behind Ryan to make sure he wasn’t being chased. “What’s the matter?”

Ryan gasped, holding a finger up to assure Locke that he intended to reply. He was really out of shape, the kid, and Locke waited with patience for him to speak.

“Ethan…” Ryan gasped out. “Took Kevin.”

Locke frowned. “What are you talking about, Ryan? You and I both saw Ethan die.”

Ryan shook his head, his breath slowing as he stood up. “We thought… we did. Not true. Alive.”

Locke glanced around incredulously. “Jack checked his pulse, Ryan. He was dead.”

Ryan swallowed, having caught his breath. “You and I both know that this Island can heal, John,” he said knowingly. Locke bit his lip.

“You said he took Kevin?” he asked.

“Yeah,” Ryan replied, “He was looking for Claire but for some reason he took Kevin. Left a hell of a lot of blood in the Pearl.”

“The Pearl?” Locke questioned, frowning again.

“Look,” said Ryan. “I’ll explain when we get there. Right now, we need to go. I’ve left Claire there.”

“Alone?” Locke asked quickly, already reaching down to grab his backpack.

“Armed,” Ryan confirmed, shrugging. “She couldn’t have made it back to the beach.”

Locke nodded, and gestured with a swing of his arm. “Lead the way.”

—-

Locke peered down at the doors into the earth, frowning contemplatively. “This is amazing,” he said quietly, dragging a finger along the dusty lip of the tunnel’s surface. He glanced over at Ryan, who was watching him with a grin of satisfaction.“You said there are more of these?”

“Here’s what’s going to happen,” Ryan said quickly, wanting to show that he had some idea of how he was going to find Kevin and that he wasn’t just making it up as he went along. “Locke, I know you have some tracking experience.”

Locke nodded pensively. “Quite a bit.”

“Good. I need you to go after Kevin and Ethan — the trail shouldn’t be too hard to follow, except that it’s getting cold.”

Locke nodded, looking longingly down into the Pearl. The mystery had brought forth something within him. A sense of purpose. A sense of meaning.

“Okay,” he said. “What should I do when I find Ethan?”

“Whatever you have to,” Ryan said darkly. “He’s already died once. Might as well finish the job.”

—-

After Locke was gone, Ryan turned to the closed Pearl doors behind him, and dragged them open. They were opening more and more easily with each visit, and they opened with barely a squeak. Grinning at this small comfort, he began descending the ladder into the hatch.

As he neared the bottom, he was stricken with the sickening thought that he hadn’t hear Claire say anything. He stopped on the ladder, hanging there in space, and hoped to God that Claire wasn’t ready to shoot him as soon as he descended into view.

“Claire?” he said quietly, though his voice carried into the tunnel. “It’s just me, Ryan. I’m back.”

He took another step on the ladder, cautiously. Nothing happened. He could hear breathing behind him. Heavy, labored breathing.

Labored. Claire was probably having her baby. She was probably having her baby, and he’d left her all alone.

He jumped down the remaining stretch of ladder and turned to face down the corridor, his legs tensed up for a quick sprint. A gun cocked, and he froze.

Claire was sitting in one of the chairs down the hall, unconscious. Her mouth was slightly open, and a purple flower of a bruise was slowly beginning to bloom on her forehead.

A figure stood to her left, pointing a gun at Ryan unshakingly. Ryan’s hands went instinctively up, flying above his head. Startled, the figure shot.

A flash of light echoed through the tunnel.

—-

Locke moved through the jungle almost silently. The trail that Ethan had left was almost too easy to follow. There was blood smeared all over the ground from his mangled foot, and Locke marveled that Ethan could have lost that much blood and still been able to drag another human being at a fairly fast pace through the woods.

His hand was on his knife the entire time, and even the slightest rustle from a nearby bird made his hand itch with anticipation. He wasn’t looking forward to killing Ethan, but he knew it was a necessity if he wanted to protect the sanctity of the Island. If he wanted to keep the Island his.

The day had just begun to fade into night when he heard the rustling. He immediately stopped, dropping to a crouch, his muscles tightening as he waited to see what the noise had been.

“I know you’re there, old man,” echoed a voice, and Locke knew it was Ethan. “I see you following me. You want him back.”

“Yes,” Locke replied quickly, and a rustling confirmed to him that Ethan was trying to find his location.

“He’s too dangerous to be kept alive,” Ethan replied quickly. Locke, on his haunches in the tall grass, glanced around, moving quickly to a new location.

“The same could be said about you, Ethan,” he replied.

Ethan seemed to consider. “Fair enough,” he replied. “You can have him back.”

Locke didn’t know how to reply, so he remained silent. There was no further reply from Ethan, either, just silence.

After about fifteen minutes, Locke felt secure enough to stand up, though he did so very cautiously. He glanced around, searching for some sign that Ethan was ready to ambush him. There was nothing.

He stepped forward into a clearing of the grass, and jumped back in shock as he saw a crumpled form sprawled across the ground in front of him.
Kevin.

  1. Joe says:

    So Kevin is dead?!

  2. Capn Stu Bing says:

Oooh, now Locke knows that the stations exist. I’m excited to see how this affects The Swan discovery. I liked the length of this episode. Felt a little longer than the last one. Keep up the great work Sam!!

  3. TRALALA! says:

    whats 1.11 called?

  4. Pogo Ford says:

Oh Gosh tell me Kevin isn’t dead. O_O

  5. Zac says:

Great Stuff. Much better than the last one.

  6. Dan says:

Liked the chapter, but there’s one deeply disturbing thing I’ve noticed…
Locke is taking orders from Ryan.

Now the important words in there are LOCKE IS TAKING ORDERS. Locke doesn’t take orders. He does whatever the f*** he wants to do. He doesn’t give orders. He does things himself. And he definitely doesn’t TAKE orders.

Again, loved the chapter, but the change in Locke and Charlie’s character (my two favorites) is starting to disturb me.

    • Sam McPherson says:

Not taking orders. We all know how easily Locke is manipulated (Anthony Cooper, Ben, etc.). Tell him he’s special and he does whatever you say. So why wouldn’t he trust a seemingly omniscient guy who tells him that he has a much greater purpose in life?

  7. Laverne1974 says:

I enjoyed this episode the most so far. Well Done!

  8. Tom Jacob says:

    I thing Kevin is alive.

  9. Adrian says:

“Here’s what’s going to happen,” Ryan said quickly, wanting to show that he had some idea of how he was going to find Ryan and that he wasn’t just making it up as he went along. “Locke, I know you have some tracking experience.”

I think Ryans name the second time is Kevin.
    Good job though.

  10. jeremy says:

    Excellent stuff!

So who shot the gun was it Mikahl (sp?) Russian dude?

  11. Avenue says:

If that’s not Ethan in the Pearl… who is it???? *que Lost twist music* Ha ha great episode!

  12. Dave Diamond says:

Its got to be the Man in Black.

  13. extrAme says:

The key to all these mysteries: Dead Is Dead.

This time you really got me, Sam! Really nice, considering the length and how quick this one is out. Still not giving up on you!

btw, longer episodes is still on my wish list, just a reminder :)

  14. Top Secret says:

Nice episode. Keep this up, you’re doing great.

  15. Cris says:

I finished Stephen King’s “On Writing” a few days ago and I couldn’t help cringing her at the adverbs: “he said knowingly”, “Ryan said darkly”, “Locke replied quickly”… xD
Haha sorry, I enjoyed the episode, I’m just King-ized for the moment! It was much better than the last one, hope you keep it up!

  16. InTheDale says:

This was great! Who’s in the Pearl with Claire??? Is Kevin dead???? How will all this change what we know happened before???? Love it, love it, love it.

  17. Timey says:

I know who is in the pearl with claire: charly.

charly hasn’t build up a relationship with claire, so it’s no big deal for him to strike her down. after following ryan to the pearl and seeing him leave (to run for john) he went inside the pearl. of course claire didn’t shoot him, but he knocked her out, because he knew that ryan would come back.
now he wants his drugs back!!!!

    best episode so far dude!!!!!

    • PPP says:

i dought charlie would do that …1 charlie is not strong enough to do that 2 claire…2 where would charlie get the skills needed to possibly dodge claires gunshots 3 like when charlie followed locke to the swan in season 2 locke would hace known if charlie was following them

  18. Jeremy says:

Whoever said “dead is dead” I think has found the answer. Jack said Ethan is dead, but somehow he’s running around the island. A little like how Christian, Yemi, Alex, and Locke died and then were walking and talking. The Man in Black. And that’s why he knows that Kevin is dangerous, because Kevin (or was it Ryan? I can’t keep track) already told MiB that he knows his origins.

This episode was much better than the last two. It was short, but you didn’t let the length stop it from having dialogue and slight character development. A short episode just means a smaller dose of the earlier episodes. It doesn’t mean you have to dramatically alter the format of the storytelling.

  19. PPP says:

hey sam…i no how u read these comments so could you update the season 1 episodes at the top menu…it still ssays like moths to a flame

  20. Marc says:

    Hey Sam,

Defintely really great epidsode. I can’t get enough keep it up sir..

  21. Baci says:

I agree that it’s the Man in Black. I’m surprised that neither Kevin nor Ryan thought that “Ethan” was MiB. Dead is dead, like others have said. And also, I’m pretty sure that Kevin isn’t dead. With six seasons planned, they’re not gonna kill off one of the two main characters so soon. His body’s “crumpled”. So what? It’s an ambiguous ending to make you think he might be dead.

  22. Christian says:

Great job Sam pray to god Ryan and Ethan are o.k.!!!!!

  23. Lori says:

I like the shorter length! Sometimes I didn’t read them because I was a little overwhelmed by the length and I was especially if I got behind even though I have very much enjoyed reading them! Keep up the good work, thanks for doing this!

  24. Jay says:

im back to loving it! loved the length! much better than last one!

  25. Nuclearfish says:

Not a bad episode, but I think if it would have worked better if it was combined with 1.09. Still seemed a bit too short to me.

And I’ll bring this up again – I think pictures from the show worked better. A couple of pictures of Locke, perhaps, wandering through the jungle. There’s nothing wrong with the photography, but it still doesn’t really fit in with the episode at all.

  26. Diane says:

I knew patience would win out. I thought this was an excellent episode, and by the comments above you have your fans speculating as much as they might have about the actual show. Good work. I don’t mind the shorter format because I can always find the time to squeeze it in, whereas with the longer one I really need a good chunk of time. I think you hit the nail on the head with the combination of dialogue, action and mystery that this one had. I’m looking forward to more. I agree with Nuclearfish about the photos, though. Yours are nice, but the ones from the show just fit better, to me.

  27. Eric says:

Homerun! Looks like the rally caps worked, we’re back in the ballgame. Keep up the great work Sam and thanks for your hard work! One thing that would be cool would be some artwork showing “Ethan” dragging Kevin through the jungle sans one foot!!

  28. Emily says:

I read all the episodes in one sitting! Great job, it’s fun to be reliving all this with the slight twists.

You should post the new episodes on the episode page, though! If I hadn’t gone to your twitter, I never would have seen 1.08-1.10 :)

  29. Meghan says:

I agree that it’s the Man in Black, especially after the ending twist. It sounds just like something he’d do.

Wouldn’t Ryan know that dead is dead, though? It bothered me that he just said “We all know this Island can heal!” or something, even though he should know that it heals but doesn’t resurrect – that “you don’t come back from that,” as Richard said.

    I don’t know.

    • Adam says:

      a downward spiral…

      • John says:

If he’s following the shows mythology and Ethan really was dead, then it has to be the Man in Black and hopefully Sam just had Ryan mention the healing powers to throw us off.

BUT, maybe Ethan never died in the first place. There are certain meditative techniques where you can slow your heart rate quite a bit. Granted, Ethans foot had just been crushed and had supposedly gone into shock, so it may’ve hard to do such a thing, but it’s possible. And Ethan tells Locke that Kevins to dangerous to be kept alive, implying he heard what Kevin said about him.

And I don’t like how Ethan just released Kevin with his reasoning only seeming to be that he doesn’t want to be a hypocrite.

  30. Curtis says:

Very good episode, perfect length. Much better than last episode.
